Introduction: What is the foundational purpose of reading science? Is it meaningful for us to read and create works of literature then? This workshop seeks to engage science students with a personal story about writing and with (short!) readings penned by masters in the realms of science and literature. It is hoped that through quick discussions and writing exercises participants will find out how literature and science complement each other and even start putting their inspirations into words.

“For me chemistry represented an indefinite cloud of future potentialities which enveloped my life to come in black volutes torn by fiery flashes, like those which had hidden Mount Sinai. Like Moses, from that cloud I expected my law, the principle of order in me, around me, and in the world. I was fed up with books, which I still continued to gulp down with indiscreet voracity, and searched for a key to the highest truths.”-Primo Levi: The Periodic Table
